Nuclear Power: The Untapped Solution for Mining & Green Steel?

Experts Point to Ontario as a Model for Energy-Intensive Industries

Amidst growing scrutiny of renewable energy initiatives, the conversation surrounding nuclear power is intensifying. A prominent voice in this debate, Dr. Chris Keefer, also President of Canadians for Nuclear Energy, is highlighting nuclear’s potential to revolutionize industrial power needs.

Ontario: A Nuclear Benchmark

Dr. Keefer suggests that the global mining sector should examine Ontario as a prime example of how nuclear energy can effectively power mining operations. This perspective comes as many industries grapple with meeting net-zero targets.

“Chasing Our Tail” on Green Steel?

The push for “green steel,” an emerging industrial frontier being explored by major players like Fortescue, BHP, and Rio Tinto, is also under the spotlight. Dr. Keefer expressed skepticism about current approaches, stating that we’re just chasing our tail in this pursuit.

Net-Zero Ambitions Under Fire

While acknowledging the laudable goal of achieving net-zero emissions, Dr. Keefer voiced strong reservations about the feasibility and commitment of many current strategies. He described the dedication to achieving net-zero as delusional.

The discussions featuring Dr. Keefer are set to be followed by presentations from industry leaders Paladin Energy and Boss Energy, further delving into the future of energy in resource extraction.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) notes that nuclear power plants provide a stable, low-carbon electricity source, crucial for energy-intensive industries. For instance, in 2022, nuclear energy provided about 25% of Canada’s electricity, with Ontario relying on it for roughly 95% of its power generation (Ontario Power Generation). This demonstrates the significant role nuclear can play in industrial power supply.
