BERLIN – Viral weight loss tips and ⁣nutrition advice circulating⁤ on TikTok and⁣ Instagram are frequently inaccurate and potentially harmful, according to ​experts at the Stiftung Gesundheitswissen (Health Knowledge Foundation) and the Hamburg ⁤consumer advice center. ⁤Influencers are making unsubstantiated claims – such as losing “10 kilos in ⁣two weeks” – without the necessary scientific backing, leaving users vulnerable to ineffective or even dangerous⁣ diets.

The proliferation of misleading information⁤ is particularly concerning⁤ given the ⁣platforms’ reach, especially among ‍young peopel.A recent study highlighted by PRNewswire ​ points to inaccurate ⁢nutrition trends gaining traction on TikTok. The issue stems from a lack of transparency regarding influencers’ credentials and the difficulty users face in⁣ discerning credible ‌sources ⁣from those‌ promoting unsubstantiated claims. This trend underscores ‍a growing need for both increased digital literacy and stronger regulatory oversight‍ of health-related advertising online.

Experts advise consumers to critically evaluate information encountered on social media.⁢ Dr. Smollich recommends seeking advice from⁣ credible sources⁣ and individuals with objective ⁣expertise,such as a ⁢degree in nutritional science. “Serious nutritional tips are scientifically proven,⁤ comprehensible, balanced and free‌ of scaremongering or‍ promises of salvation,” she stated.

Who created the⁤ information and what are their qualifications? How current is the information? Is the information ‍presented neutrally? And are sources cited?

Jana Fischer from the⁢ Hamburg ‍consumer advice center believes education alone is insufficient. “We won’t⁤ be able to do it with education alone,” she ⁢said, advocating for increased ‍official controls to enforce existing regulations against false advertising.
