Brewers defy expectations: How Milwaukee wins despite low payroll & key trades

March 1, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

PHOENIX — Tony Clark, the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), is expected to resign, according to multiple reports, as the union faces critical labor negotiations and increasing scrutiny. The announcement comes as the Milwaukee Brewers, a team consistently defying expectations with a low payroll, continue to navigate a season marked by strategic roster moves and a defiant underdog mentality.

The expected resignation of Clark, first reported by UPI, occurs as MLB and the players prepare for collective bargaining talks. The timing is particularly sensitive given the potential for a lockout if a novel agreement isn’t reached. Geo Super reported the resignation is occurring amid an investigation, though details remain scarce.

Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, the Brewers are once again challenging preseason predictions. Despite trading away key players like ace Freddy Peralta to the New York Mets and third baseman Caleb Durbin to the Boston Red Sox this offseason, the team maintains a confident outlook. The trades brought pitching prospect Brandon Sproat and shortstop/center fielder Jett Williams to Milwaukee, and left-handed pitchers Kyle Harrison and Shane Drohan, and infielder David Hamilton to Boston.

The Brewers’ offseason spending totaled just $6.5 million, a stark contrast to teams like the Chicago Cubs, who invested $209 million in free agency, including signing Alex Bregman to a five-year, $175 million contract. Milwaukee filled their third-base vacancy with Luis Rengifo on a one-year, $3.5 million deal.

“Honestly, we just don’t care,” Brewers outfielder/DH Christian Yelich said, echoing a sentiment prevalent throughout the clubhouse. “It’s the same story every year.”

The Brewers have dominated the NL Central, winning three consecutive division titles, four of the last five, and five of the past seven full seasons, averaging 92.6 victories a year since 2020, including a franchise-record and major-league leading 97 victories last year. Remarkably, they haven’t been a preseason pick to win the division in any of those seasons.

“If people want to overlook us, that’s fine. Really, we embrace being underdogs here,” said Brewers GM Matt Arnold.

The departure of Peralta followed a similar pattern to previous offseasons, where the Brewers traded away Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes and All-Star closers Josh Hader and Devin Williams. The team’s strategy involves trading potential free agents before they reach the open market, maximizing return value.

“We kind of defy what’s going on,” starter Brandon Woodruff, the longest-tenured Brewer, told USA TODAY Sports. “We’re not supposed to be doing what we’re doing with our payroll and our market. You see what we spend, and it’s like how we going to win again. Then, you think, well, we did that last year without spending, we can do it again.”

The Brewers’ success has sparked debate about the necessity of a salary cap in MLB. Players and management alike point to the team’s ability to compete despite a limited budget as evidence that creative roster-building and a strong team culture can overcome financial disadvantages.

“Our team is a great example of why you don’t need a salary cap,” All-Star closer Trevor Megill said. “Get creative. There’s more than one way to win a baseball game. Just because you pay guys all of that money, doesn’t mean they’re going to the playoffs.”

The team’s approach, however, also presents a challenge to the MLBPA’s goals. Although the Brewers demonstrate that small-market teams can succeed without massive spending, they also prove that significant financial investment isn’t always a prerequisite for winning.

“We prove that you don’t need to sign 10 players to $100 million deals to be good and to compete,” outfielder Sal Frelick said.

The Brewers’ ownership, led by Mark Attanasio, operates with a different financial philosophy than teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have the highest payroll in baseball. Attanasio purchased the franchise for $223 million, a fraction of the resources available to the Dodgers.

Manager Pat Murphy, who recently signed a three-year, $8.95 million contract extension, emphasized the importance of team chemistry and player character. “It’s difficult because Durbin represented how we played, what we were about,” Murphy said. “He was as excited about getting on base by a hit-by-pitch as he was getting a line drive hit. He was all about just getting on base for us.”

As the Brewers continue to navigate the season, they remain focused on their internal culture and their ability to outperform expectations. The team’s success serves as a testament to their resilience and their commitment to a unique, underdog identity.
