Bigger, brighter, closer: November’s supermoon in photos

by Rachel Kim – Technology Editor

NEW ORLEANS – A strikingly bright supermoon illuminated skies over New⁢ Orleans on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, ‍offering a breathtaking celestial display above⁤ the city skyline. The nearly full moon coincided‍ wiht the flight of a flock of roseate spoonbills, ⁣creating ⁤a memorable scene captured by photographer David Grunfeld.

November’s supermoon-occurring ‌when a full moon⁤ coincides with the moon’s closest approach to ‌Earth in its orbit-appears larger and brighter than ⁤usual. This phenomenon, a result of the ‍moon’s elliptical orbit, draws the lunar body approximately 26,000 miles closer to Earth than at its⁣ farthest point. The November 4th supermoon was particularly notable for its visibility across the United States, providing a captivating spectacle for both‍ amateur astronomers and casual observers. The event‌ is expected to influence tidal patterns, with slightly higher ⁤high tides and lower low tides observed in coastal areas.

Grunfeld’s ‍photograph, published by The Times-Picayune/The New‍ Orleans Advocate ⁢ via the⁤ Associated Press, showcased the supermoon rising above the Caesars Superdome and Smoothie King Centre. The image highlights the contrast between the natural beauty of the lunar event and the‌ urban landscape of New Orleans.
