Mecklenburg-western pomerania: SPD Plummets⁢ in Polls, afd Takes‌ Lead

SCHWERIN – A new survey ⁣conducted by Infratest Dimap for Norddeutscher Rundfunk‌ (NDR) reveals⁢ a dramatic shift in ⁢voter sentiment‌ in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with the Social democratic Party (SPD) of Minister President Manuela ⁣Schwesig experiencing‍ a significant decline in‍ support. The right-wing populist Choice for Germany ⁣(AfD) now leads the⁤ polls, signaling⁢ a potential upheaval in the state’s political landscape.

The‌ poll, conducted⁢ between September‌ 18th and‍ 23rd among 1,151 residents of‍ Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ‍via computer-assisted telephone and online ⁤interviews‍ (674 telephone,477‍ online),paints a concerning picture for the SPD. This shift comes ahead of ⁤the state election scheduled for September‌ 20,2026,which will be held concurrently ‌with elections for the Berlin House of Representatives. ⁤The⁢ results underscore growing dissatisfaction with ⁢the⁤ current state goverment ⁢and a rising‍ tide of ⁢support for‍ the AfD, perhaps reshaping the political future of the region.

The survey data indicates a substantial drop⁤ in support for‍ Schwesig’s SPD, ⁢while the AfD ‌has surged ahead. Further state elections are slated for 2024 in Baden-Württemberg (March⁢ 8th),‍ Rhineland-Palatinate (March 22nd), and Saxony-Anhalt (September 6th).

Opinion polls are inherently subject to uncertainties, notably due to⁤ weakening party affiliations and increasingly last-minute voting decisions, making accurate data weighting challenging⁢ for ⁤research institutions. It’s important to note that surveys ⁣reflect opinions ‍ at ⁤the time ⁣of the survey and ⁣should not be interpreted as predictions⁣ of election outcomes. (DPA,‌ AFP)
