Mecklenburg-western pomerania: SPD Plummets in Polls, afd Takes Lead
SCHWERIN – A new survey conducted by Infratest Dimap for Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) reveals a dramatic shift in voter sentiment in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with the Social democratic Party (SPD) of Minister President Manuela Schwesig experiencing a significant decline in support. The right-wing populist Choice for Germany (AfD) now leads the polls, signaling a potential upheaval in the state’s political landscape.
The poll,conducted between September 18th and 23rd among 1,151 residents of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania via computer-assisted telephone and online interviews (674 telephone,477 online),paints a concerning picture for the SPD. This shift comes ahead of the state election scheduled for September 20,2026,which will be held concurrently with elections for the Berlin House of Representatives. The results underscore growing dissatisfaction with the current state goverment and a rising tide of support for the AfD, perhaps reshaping the political future of the region.
The survey data indicates a substantial drop in support for Schwesig’s SPD, while the AfD has surged ahead. Further state elections are slated for 2024 in Baden-Württemberg (March 8th), Rhineland-Palatinate (March 22nd), and Saxony-Anhalt (September 6th).
