Melania Trump Presides Over UN Security Council Meeting Amidst US-Iran Conflict

Novel York – In an unprecedented move, First Lady Melania Trump chaired a session of the United Nations Security Council on Monday, March 2nd, 2026, focusing on the plight of children in conflict zones. The session convened as the United States holds the rotating presidency of the Council for March, and occurred amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following the launch of a joint U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran.

Addressing the Council, Mrs. Trump stated, “The United States stands with all children around the world. I hope that peace will soon be with you.” She similarly extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones, acknowledging “their courage and dedication will not be forgotten,” a statement made following initial reports of American casualties in the Middle East conflict.

The decision to have Mrs. Trump preside over the session was announced last week, marking the first time a First Lady has held the gavel at a Security Council meeting. According to the UN, no spouse of a head of state has previously led such a session. The U.S. Government chose to focus the meeting on the intersection of children, technology, and education during times of conflict – a topic aligned with Mrs. Trump’s established advocacy efforts, including past negotiations with Moscow regarding the release of Ukrainian children allegedly taken by Russian forces.

UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo “paid tribute” to the First Lady and “her personal commitment” to reuniting children with their families. French Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont drew a parallel to Eleanor Roosevelt’s contribution to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, describing Mrs. Trump’s presence as “an encouragement.” Greek Ambassador Aglaia Balta offered a simple “Thank you, Madam President” immediately following Mrs. Trump’s remarks. Even Russia reportedly “welcomed” her participation.

The move, but, comes against a backdrop of strained relations between the Trump administration and the United Nations. President Trump has repeatedly asserted that the UN possesses “great potential” but has “never realized” it. His UN Ambassador, Mike Waltz, publicly criticized the Security Council on Saturday, accusing it of failing to enforce its resolutions regarding Iran and suggesting that the presence of the Iranian ambassador at an emergency Council meeting following the strikes “makes a mockery of this body,” citing a “lack of moral clarity.”

Following the session, Mrs. Trump wished the Council members “strength and determination to preserve peace in the world.”

Daniel Forti, an analyst with International Crisis Group, expressed skepticism that this event signals a shift in the administration’s stance toward the UN. He suggested it would “only reinforce the contradictions inherent in American policy on war and peace.”

Iran’s Ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, voiced strong criticism, stating, “It’s deeply shameful and hypocritical that on the very first day of their presidency… the United States convened” this meeting “while at the same time, they launched missiles that struck Iranian cities and schools, killing children.”

Observers have also noted that the United States withdrew from UNESCO last year and has ceased collaboration with the UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. President Trump’s creation of a separate “Board of Peace” has been interpreted by some as an attempt to circumvent the Security Council. Financial concerns also loom large, with the U.S. Owing over $4 billion in arrears to the UN’s general and peacekeeping budgets, despite a recent payment of $160 million.
