Beijing, China – Researchers at Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, affiliated with Tsinghua University, have reported breakthroughs in spatial transcriptomic profiling of distal cholangiocarcinoma and neural stimulation technology for hemifacial spasm, according to announcements made in the first weeks of 2026.
On February 5, 2026, the hospital announced that a team led by Academician Dong Jiahong had achieved a breakthrough in understanding the spatial characteristics of perineural invasion in distal cholangiocarcinoma, a particularly aggressive form of bile duct cancer. This research utilized spatial transcriptomic profiling, a technique that maps gene expression patterns within tissue samples, providing insights into the mechanisms driving cancer spread. A similar announcement from January 8, 2026, detailed the team’s initial findings.
Separately, on January 19, 2026, a team led by Li Zhou, in collaboration with the School of Medicine of Tsinghua University, published research detailing the development of a neural stimulation technology aimed at alleviating hemifacial spasm, a neurological disorder causing involuntary muscle contractions on one side of the face.
These advancements come as Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital continues to expand its capacity and services. The hospital, jointly managed by Tsinghua University and the Beijing Municipality, currently operates with 1,000 beds, with plans to add another 500 beds following a groundbreaking ceremony held on December 30, 2019, expected to be completed in 2024. The hospital was designated a Class A medical insurance institution in Beijing in November 2021 and launched a direct medical insurance settlement function via its mobile app on December 1, 2023.
The hospital also highlighted research from its Ophthalmology Center, noting a significant study focused on preventing myopia among teenagers, and new findings published by a team led by Tien Yin Wong and Wang Yaxing regarding the generalizability of AI Foundation Models in ophthalmology. A project led by the Wang Guihuai team, in cooperation with Wang Xiumei and Wu Hui from Tsinghua University, received the “Gold with congratulations of the Jury” award at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.
Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital received qualifications as a “National Demonstration Center of Clinical Teaching and Training” in November 2020. The hospital also serves as a hub for international patients, as reported by China Daily on January 21, 2026.
