Legacy of Kain Reboot Canceled by Embracer Group After One Year of Progress
MONTREAL – A reboot of the beloved legacy of Kain franchise was in development at Eidos Montreal for approximately one year before being canceled following Embracer Group’s acquisition of the studio, Insider Gaming reports. The project, internally referred to as “P16” – signifying Eidos Montreal’s 16th project – was described as a “soft-reboot” of the series.
Former Eidos Montreal employees’ resumes list work on a “Dark Fantasy action RPG” featuring melee combat and parkour gameplay, which Insider Gaming has confirmed was intended to revitalize the Legacy of Kain universe. Development reportedly progressed smoothly, resulting in limited playable gameplay.
Embracer Group ultimately pulled funding for the project and later sold the Legacy of Kain franchise back to Crystal Dynamics. It remains unclear if Crystal Dynamics has plans to continue development on the reboot or any future Legacy of Kain titles.
