Weekend Women’s College Basketball: Oklahoma Rolls, Indiana Survives, Iowa State Prepares for Indiana
NORMAN, OK – No. 9 Oklahoma continued its dominant run with a 100-46 victory over Coppin State on Friday, while Indiana narrowly defeated Gonzaga 76-72. Both teams are set for challenging matchups on Sunday, with Oklahoma facing Florida State and Indiana squaring off against Iowa State.
The Sooners (6-1) overwhelmed the Eagles (1-6) from the opening tip, racing to a 14-2 lead and never looking back. Sahar Williams led Oklahoma with 21 points and nine rebounds, supported by Zya Vann (16 points), Aaliyah Chavez and Raegan beers (14 points each), and Payton Verhulst (12 points). Oklahoma’s size proved decisive, resulting in a 52-8 advantage in points in the paint and a 28-2 margin in second-chance points. This marks Oklahoma’s fifth straight win by at least 25 points and third consecutive win by at least 53 points, fueled by one of the nation’s top offenses averaging over 88 points per game and a leading rebounding rate. Paris McBride paced Coppin State with 17 points, while Khila Morris added 13. Coppin State will face Missouri State on Sunday.
In a tightly contested game, Indiana (7-0) held off a late charge from Gonzaga (3-4) thanks to a clutch three-point play by Shay Ciezki with 17.1 seconds remaining. Ciezki finished with a game-high 24 points, while Lenee Beaumont contributed 11 and Nevaeh Caffey, Socka-Nguemen, and Maya Makalusky each added 10 for the Hoosiers. Gonzaga, led by Lauren Whittaker’s 27 points and Allie Turner’s 21, fought back from a late deficit, with jaiden Haile bringing the Bulldogs within one point with 19.5 seconds left. Indiana’s 22-10 edge in second-chance points proved crucial. Gonzaga will play Marquette on Sunday.
iowa State will also be in action on Sunday, taking on Indiana in a matchup that pits two strong programs against each other.
