Middlesex High School student Dies Following Car Crash
MIDDLESEX, NJ – James Matula, a junior at Middlesex High School, has died following a car crash, authorities confirmed Sunday. The tragedy has deeply impacted the school community and prompted an outpouring of support for his family.
Matula, 17, was a member of the Middlesex blue Jays baseball team, which has a storied history with state championships in 1990, 2007, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2021, and most recently in June 2024. Last season, Matula played outfield, batting .263 with six runs batted in over 44 plate appearances, and recorded a couple of stolen bases, according to Central Jersey Sports Radio. He was anticipated to contribute to the team’s continued success.
News of Matula’s death spread quickly on social media, with friends and teammates sharing tributes. Ak, a close friend, posted a heartfelt message: “From the day we met, we had an instant bond that could never be broke. I know you will always be watching over me in everything I do cause you were my brother. I love you buddy.”
To help the family with expenses, a GoFundMe campaign was established by local brewery capital Craft. As of Sunday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised over $41,000.
middlesex School District Superintendent Brian Freeman announced that additional support services have been activated across all school buildings. Counselors from the Traumatic Loss Coalition, district counselors, child study team members, and administrators will be available Monday to provide individual and small group counseling, as well as a safe space for students.
“We encourage families to reach out to their building principals or counselors if you believe your child may benefit from talking with someone or if you need guidance on how to support them at home,” Freeman said. “During times like this, our strength comes from the way we care for one another. I am grateful for the kindness and respect that define our Middlesex community, and I know that spirit will guide us in the days ahead.”
