Sony Moves to Block Fan-Run Servers Reviving Discontinued PS5, PC Game Concord
Sony is taking action to shut down a fan-led effort to revive Concord, the team-based shooter it abruptly discontinued earlier this year. A group of hobbyists successfully reverse engineered the game, enabling them to boot it,connect to a lobby, and play matches-drawing attention to the short-lived title’s potential. However, according to a report from The Game Post, a “digital asset protection” company named MarkScan, frequently utilized by Sony to remove content from the internet, has begun issuing copyright strikes against footage from the revived servers.
Concord launched in August 2024 for PlayStation 5 and PC, but was pulled from sale and servers shut down in September 2024 due to low player counts and negative reception. The Game Post noted the concurrent user base on the fan servers likely mirrored the game’s peak numbers during it’s official release. While the reverse engineering team has not yet received a cease and desist order, they appear to be scaling back their efforts following the increased scrutiny.
markscan’s actions target gameplay footage, mirroring Sony’s past practices regarding modded content. Push Square reports that the situation raises questions about Sony’s willingness to allow a small community to maintain a game that struggled to find an audience during its official run.
