Donald Trump is reportedly seeking to have the new Washington Commanders stadium named in his honor, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Don Van Natta Jr. A senior White House source stated, “It’s what the president wants, and it will probably happen.”
The proposed $3.7 billion stadium is planned for the site of the former RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., where the Commanders played from 1961 to 1996, winning three Super Bowl titles during that period. The Commanders are contributing $2.7 billion to the project and will cover any cost overruns. Construction is anticipated to begin next year, with completion slated for 2030.
Commanders owner Josh Harris has reportedly been informed of Trump’s desire. While no formal negotiations have occurred, Trump is scheduled to attend Sunday’s game between the Commanders and the Detroit Lions at the team’s current home, FedExField in Landover, Maryland, as a guest of Harris, possibly opening a dialog about the naming rights.
Sources indicate the Commanders may not have complete control over stadium naming decisions. The columbia Council approved the stadium project in September.
