Trump Wants Commanders Stadium Named After Him

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Donald Trump is reportedly seeking to have the new ⁣Washington ⁤Commanders stadium named ⁤in his honor, ‌according ⁢to sources ⁢cited by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Don ‌Van Natta Jr. A senior⁤ White House source stated, “It’s what the president ‍wants, ⁢and it will probably ‍happen.”

The ⁤proposed $3.7 billion stadium is‌ planned ⁤for the site‍ of the former⁤ RFKStadium in⁤ Washington, D.C., where the Commanders played from 1961 to 1996, winning three Super Bowl titles⁢ during that period. The Commanders are contributing $2.7 billion to the project and will cover any ⁣cost overruns. Construction is anticipated ⁤to begin next year, with ‌completion slated for 2030.

Commanders owner⁢ Josh⁢ Harris has reportedly been informed of Trump’s desire.‌ While no formal negotiations ⁢have occurred, Trump is scheduled to attend Sunday’s⁢ game between the Commanders and⁢ the Detroit Lions at the⁢ team’s current home, FedExField ‍in Landover, Maryland, as⁢ a guest of Harris, ⁢possibly opening a dialog about the naming rights.

Sources indicate the Commanders may not have complete control⁤ over stadium naming decisions. The columbia ‌Council⁣ approved the stadium project‍ in September.
