Former NFL Running Back Doug Martin Dies following Encounter with Police
Oakland, CA – Doug Martin, a former NFL Pro Bowl running back, died saturday morning after a struggle with police at a residence in Oakland, authorities confirmed monday.Martin, 35, originally from Oakland and a standout at Boise State, had been privately battling mental health challenges, according to a statement released by his former agent, brian Murphy, at the request of the Martin family.
Martin’s death has prompted investigations by the Oakland Police Department, the city police commission, the community police review agency, and the county district attorney’s office. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee expressed condolences, noting Martin’s “distinguished NFL career” and calling his passing a loss for the city.
According to Murphy’s statement, Martin’s parents had sought medical help for their son and contacted local authorities after he became overwhelmed and disoriented. He fled his home and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down,leading to police intervention and his subsequent custody. “Ultimately, mental illness proved to be the one opponent from which Doug could not run,” Murphy said.
Drafted 31st overall in the 2012 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Martin quickly established himself as a premier running back. He rushed for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns in his rookie season, earning a Pro Bowl selection.He was again named first-team All-Pro and selected to the Pro Bowl in 2015 after rushing for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns.
over six seasons with the Buccaneers and one with the Raiders, Martin amassed 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns. He also recorded 148 receptions for 1,207 yards and two scores.The Buccaneers released a statement expressing their sadness at his passing, acknowledging his “lasting impact” on the franchise and his selection as one of the team’s top 50 players in its 50th-anniversary celebration.
