ICC Rejects Israel’s Appeal: Netanyahu Arrest Warrants Stand

ICC Rejects Israel’s Appeal Regarding Arrest Warrants‌ for Netanyahu and ‌gallant

Published: July 23, ⁣2024

The‍ International Criminal Court (ICC) has definitively rejected Israel’s request to appeal a ⁣recent decision confirming the validity of⁣ arrest warrants issued for Prime Minister ⁤Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav‌ Gallant. ⁢The warrants stem from allegations of war crimes⁤ and crimes against humanity committed during the⁢ conflict in Gaza.

In November, the ICC ⁤prosecutor resolute there were “reasonable grounds” to believe both Netanyahu and Gallant bear criminal duty for these⁤ alleged offenses. ⁣This initial finding sparked ⁢immediate and strong condemnation from Israel and the United States.

Both Netanyahu⁢ and U.S.President Joe Biden publicly denounced the ICC’s ⁢actions. Netanyahu labeled the decision‍ “anti-Semitic,” while President ⁣Biden deemed it “scandalous.” Following the⁢ initial warrant requests, the⁣ U.S. imposed sanctions on senior ICC officials.

Israel initially⁢ petitioned the ICC in May to reject the ‌warrants, ⁤concurrently pursuing a‍ separate⁣ appeal‌ to determine the⁢ Court’s jurisdictional authority in the case. On July 16th, the ICC ⁤dismissed Israel’s request to annul⁤ the arrest warrants, stating there was “no legal basis”‍ to do so pending a resolution of‍ the jurisdictional question.

A ⁣week later, Israel sought permission to appeal that decision. However, in a ruling issued today, the ICC judges determined that the manner in which Israel framed it’s appeal was not subject to review. The Court’s thirteen-page decision formally rejected ⁤the request, stating, “The Chamber therefore⁣ rejects the request.”
