trump Deploys national Guard to Chicago, Faces Legal Challenge in Portland
Donald Trump’s management has deployed National Guard troops to Illinois and attempted to do so in oregon, sparking opposition from local officials and legal challenges. The moves come amid a surge in immigration enforcement and heightened tensions surrounding protests.
In Illinois, Trump authorized the deployment of National Guard troops to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Chicago, despite objections from Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson. ICE has been conducting operations targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records.
Pritzker criticized the deployment as a ”manufactured performance” designed for political control rather than public safety, stating, ”For Donald Trump, this has never been about safety. This is about control.” He also noted that state and local law enforcement are coordinating to secure the ICE Broadview facility, which has been a frequent target of protests. Thirteen people were arrested on Friday near the facility during demonstrations against the increased enforcement.
Meanwhile, a federal judge in Oregon has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to deploy the National Guard in Portland. Trump had previously described the city as “war-ravaged” and announced plans to send federal troops to protect federal property. However, local officials pointed out that Trump’s claims and social media posts appeared to rely on images from 2020, during the protests following the killing of George Floyd.
U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut issued the order Saturday in response to a lawsuit filed by the state and city of Portland. The Department of Defense had planned to place 200 members of Oregon’s National Guard under federal control for 60 days. Oregon officials disputed Trump’s characterization of the city, noting that recent protests at the U.S.ICE building typically involved only a couple dozen participants.
these actions represent the latest in a series of confrontations between the Trump administration and state and local governments over immigration policy and the use of federal resources.
