Latvia’s Rinkēvičs Addresses UN on Russia, Ukraine, and Global Security

Latvia to Prioritize‌ International Law, Support Ukraine & Seek Peace in gaza as UN Security Council Member

Latvia’s President has outlined teh nation’s ⁤key priorities⁣ as it begins its term on the UN Security Council, emphasizing a commitment ‌to upholding‌ international law and defending UN values. He expressed gratitude for the national support that enabled Latvia’s membership.

A central focus will ⁣be the protection of the ​international order based on rules and laws,alongside advocating for women’s rights,peace,and security,ensuring the voices of vulnerable populations are heard. Latvia also ⁢intends to‍ contribute to efforts within the security Council to mitigate ​emerging ​security threats, including those related to climate change, ⁤cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

The President ⁣voiced strong concern ⁢over attempts to undermine the UN’s foundational​ principles, specifically ​citing Russia, alongside its allies ⁤Iran ​and ⁤North korea,⁤ as actors​ seeking to ​prioritize power ‍over rights. He condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine, stating the country is attempting to inflict suffering and forcibly ⁣alter Ukraine’s territory.⁣ He affirmed that ⁤Ukraine⁤ is ⁣fighting not only for its own sovereignty but also for the ⁤core values of the United Nations.

Latvia pledged continued⁣ support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, committing to‍ protect Ukrainian children illegally taken to russia⁢ and to leverage‍ its⁣ position on the Security ​Council to​ facilitate a peaceful resolution ⁢to the ‍conflict.

Beyond Ukraine, the President stressed the ⁢universal obligation to adhere ⁤to UN principles, including addressing the crisis in ⁣Gaza. While acknowledging⁢ Israel’s right ​to self-defense under international law, he called for an ​immediate ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid, and ultimately, a lasting peace that respects the ⁣rights of both ⁤Israelis and Palestinians. He ⁣unequivocally ‍stated that ⁣terrorism is unacceptable.
