ICC Suspends USA Cricket Membership Over Governance Issues

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

USA Cricket‌ Suspended by ICC Amid Governance Concerns

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket’s membership, effective promptly, following a year-long ‍review and discussions with ⁤stakeholders. ‌The decision stems from repeated failures by USA Cricket ‍to ⁤meet⁤ its obligations as an ICC member, as outlined in the ICC’s ‌Constitution.

Specifically, the ICC cited a lack of a⁣ functional governance structure, insufficient progress towards achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee ⁢(USOPC),and actions that have negatively⁢ impacted the reputation⁣ of cricket both in the US and internationally.

Despite co-hosting ⁣the T20 World Cup in the Americas last year, USA Cricket had⁢ been ⁣previously notified of⁤ non-compliance ‍with ICC membership Criteria at the ICC’s 2024 annual general meeting and was granted 12 months to address the issues.

the‍ ICC emphasized its commitment to minimizing disruption to players and the ⁣sport’s advancement, particularly with cricket’s ⁢upcoming return to the Olympic ⁤programme at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. USA’s national teams will continue ⁤to be eligible to participate in ICC events, including Olympic preparations.

To ensure continued ‌support for athletes, the ICC will temporarily oversee the management and ⁢administration of USA national teams, potentially ⁤through designated representatives. A Normalisation Committee, backed by ⁣ICC management, has been established to define the necessary steps for USA Cricket ⁢to regain its membership rights. This will involve demonstrable improvements to governance, operations, and its overall position within the cricket landscape.⁣ The committee will also monitor progress and offer guidance.

The ICC stated ⁣the suspension is necessary to safeguard the long-term health of ⁢the ‌game ‍and prioritize the interests of cricketers in the USA, ‌aiming to elevate player development and performance.
