Iraqi Man Repeatedly Returns to Germany Despite Deportation, Faces Mental Health Evaluation
Magdeburg, Germany – An Iraqi man, identified as Ismail A., is at the center of a legal battle in Germany after repeatedly re-entering the country following multiple deportations, most recently in February 2025. The case highlights ongoing challenges with enforcing deportation orders and raises questions about the intersection of asylum law, mental health, and public safety.
Ismail A., currently an asylum seeker in Sweden, appeared in court today before Judge Andreas Ziegel, requiring a translator due to limited German language skills. he confirmed he resides in asylum accommodation in Sweden but lacks a permanent address in Germany. authorities are now seeking to determine if a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia warrants his placement in a secure facility while his deportation status is resolved.
According to information obtained by Bild,Ismail A.initially sought asylum in Sweden. However, he has repeatedly traveled to germany, most recently being returned to Trelleborg, Sweden, by German Federal Police under the Dublin Regulation in February 2025. He quickly reappeared in Sachsen-Anhalt.
The court must now assess whether Ismail A. suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, which could lead to his detention in a closed institution within Sachsen. Sources within security services indicate there is consensus on his deportation, but a destination remains unclear. One insider stated, “Ideally, he would be deported to Iraq. He keeps coming back from Sweden.”
The trial is continuing behind closed doors.
