NASA Offers Public a Chance to Send Names to the Moon on Artemis II Mission
WASHINGTON – Space enthusiasts can symbolically join NASA’s upcoming Artemis II mission, the first crewed flight of the Artemis program, by submitting their names to travel aboard the Orion spacecraft. The agency announced today an chance for the public to participate in the historic mission, scheduled for launch no later than 2026.
The “Send Your Name with Artemis II” initiative will embed submitted names on a memory card that will fly on the spacecraft as it loops around the moon and returns to earth. This 10-day mission will serve as a critical test flight for systems and equipment destined for future deep space exploration, including eventual missions to Mars.
during the flight, Orion will initially enter an elliptical orbit ranging from 185 to 2,250 kilometers in altitude. It will then transition to a wider orbit, completing a circuit approximately every 23.5 hours at distances varying between 185 and 74,000 kilometers from Earth.
The four-member crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
“It is an opportunity to inspire people from all over the world and give them the possibility of accompanying us while we open the way to human missions farther in space,” said Lori Glaze, NASA’s interim associate administrator for Exploration Systems Development Missions.
Participants who submit their names will recieve a digital boarding pass as a souvenir, available for download in both Spanish and English. Submissions are being accepted thru the official NASA website: https://www3.nasa.gov/envia-tu-nombre-con-artemis/ or https://www3.nasa.gov/send-your-name-with-artemis/.
Artemis II represents a pivotal step in NASA’s long-term goal of establishing a sustained human presence on the Moon and preparing for future crewed missions to Mars.
