CUPERTINO, CA – Apple has announced significant upgrades too the camera systems in its forthcoming iPhone 17 Pro lineup, introducing features designed to improve selfie quality, expand creative recording options, and deliver enhanced zoom capabilities. The updates position Apple as continuing to innovate in mobile photography and videography.
Improved Selfies with New Sensor & AI Assistance
The iPhone 17 pro models will feature a new 18-megapixel front-facing camera, promising increased detail in selfies and improved stabilization for 4K HDR video recording. Apple is also leveraging artificial intelligence to expand the field of view and automatically adjust image orientation, aiming for a more convenient user experience. This AI assistance is designed to minimize the need to awkwardly re-grip the phone for selfies, though users may need time to adjust to the change.
Dual Capture Now Native to iPhone
Responding to a feature long available on Android devices – including Samsung’s “Dual Recording” and Nokia’s earlier “bothie” functionality – Apple is natively integrating ”Dual Capture” into the iPhone camera app. This allows users to together record video using both the front and rear cameras, offering unique perspectives for content creation. Accessible through the video mode’s overflow menu, Dual capture supports recording up to 4K at 30 frames per second, displaying a floating preview of the front camera alongside the main viewfinder.Users can adjust the placement of the front camera preview before recording,as it cannot be altered post-capture.
Extended Zoom Range with 48MP Telephoto Lens
For photography enthusiasts, the iPhone 17 Pro models boast an upgraded telephoto camera. While decreasing the optical zoom from 5X to 4X, Apple has increased the sensor resolution to 48 megapixels and increased the sensor size. This combination is designed to deliver superior image quality across the entire zoom range, maintaining optical-like quality even at higher digital zoom levels up to 8X. This upgrade caters to photographers who prefer tighter framing without sacrificing detail.
