Early september Snowfall Reported in Michigan‘s Upper Peninsula

Eagle harbor, MI – A dusting of snow fell in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on Thursday, September 4th, marking an unusually early start to the winter season, according to the National Weather Service. The snow/rain mixture was observed in Keweenaw County, specifically near Eagle Harbor.

While not unprecedented, the snowfall is considered early for the region. According to NWS Marquette meteorologist Dan Thompson, the earliest recorded trace of snow in the area was September 12th. “that video was up in the Keweenaw, where it tends to snow a little bit earlier,” Thompson said. A video of the precipitation was posted to the Facebook page of Fletchy’s Otter Belly Lodge.

The early snowfall coincides with a significant cold front bringing unseasonably cool air to the Northern Plains and Midwest. Cities like Minneapolis,Milwaukee,Sioux Falls, and omaha are expected to see high temperatures only reaching the 60s. Thompson added that while early, “we’ve got a pretty unseasonably cool air mass in place,” and “it’s not totally unheard of to get these types of air masses this early in the fall.”
