JOHANNESBURG – Comic-Con Africa drew thousands of fans and cosplayers to Johannesburg this weekend, offering a vibrant festivity of pop culture and a unique space for inclusivity, organizers said. The event,held August 30,2025,featured international celebrities and showcased the creativity of local fans through elaborate costumes and displays.
This year’s convention marks a important moment for South Africa’s growing fandom community, providing a platform for self-expression and connection. According to attendees,Comic-Con Africa fosters a sense of belonging for people of all backgrounds,mirroring the inclusive spirit frequently enough found within the worlds of comics,gaming,and animation. “For people who feel like they don’t necessarily fit in anywhere else, Comic-Con is also creating that kind of space for us,” said attendee Skhosana.
International stars headlined the event,including U.S.actor Jessie T. Usher from the Amazon prime series “The Boys,” actor,comedian and writer Dan Fogler,known for his role as Jacob Kowalski in the “Fantastic Beasts” films,and Misha Collins,best known for his portrayal of Castiel in “Supernatural.”
Fans eagerly sought autograph and photo opportunities with the celebrities, but also celebrated each other’s dedication to cosplay. “The first picture I took was with Sailor Moon,my favorite character of all time,” said Owami Sibanyoni,23,who attended dressed as Musa from ”Winx Club.”
The convention was moved from its usual late-September schedule to accommodate the G20 summit, which will be held at the same venue later in the year.
