Sampoerna Invests $300 million in Indonesian Manufacturing & Research, Launching State-of-the-Art “Superlab“
Jakarta, indonesia – PT HM sampoerna tbk is making a significant investment in Indonesia‘s scientific future, committing US $300 million (approximately Rp 4.87 trillion, based on an exchange rate of Rp 16,230) to the construction of a new factory and a cutting-edge research facility, dubbed a “superlab.” The initiative, announced Saturday, August 23, 2025, is poised to engage 200 Indonesian scientists and position the nation as a key hub for innovation within the philip morris International network.
Speaking at a Live Podcast Endgame event in South Jakarta, PT HM Sampoerna Tbk President Director Ivan Cahyadi emphasized the company’s dedication to bolstering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. “Sampoerna has just invested in the most recent factory for the world of Philip Morris – US $300 million,” Cahyadi stated.”We beat out other countries for this investment in Indonesia. And this isn’t just a factory; we are building a superlab, one of only two in the world, involving 200 Indonesian scientists.”
Currently, the Sampoerna research and development team is finalizing plans for the superlab in Switzerland, the location of the parent company’s headquarters. While the immediate impact will be the employment of 200 researchers, Cahyadi expressed confidence in a considerable “multiplier effect” for Indonesia’s scientific and economic landscape.
“It is mathematical like that, but there is always a multiplier, and this multiplier can create a miracle later if this is managed properly and correctly,” he explained. He underscored the importance of providing a platform and opportunities for Indonesian talent, believing that a meritocratic environment will accelerate innovation.
Cahyadi illustrated this point with the success of the Sampoerna Retail Community (SRC) program.initially encompassing 9,000 grocery stores after years of operation, the program experienced explosive growth following the introduction of targeted assistance to members. Within 2-3 years, membership surged to 30,000, and currently stands at 290,000 stores – representing 11% of Indonesia’s retail GDP.
“This has no count. Logically thinking, this will not enter, want to add how much every year. But when the tipping point occurs, the multiplier occurs, the figure can enter,” Cahyadi noted, drawing a parallel to the potential impact of the new superlab and its scientific workforce.
