7 Israeli Soldiers Detained Over Alleged Sexual Assault Junior Member

Israeli Soldiers Face Detention Over Abuse Claims

Seven Israeli soldiers are in detention following allegations of sexual harassment and rape against junior members within their unit, triggering outrage and investigations into potential war-related abuses.

Air Force Soldiers Detained

The Israeli military court has extended the detention of seven soldiers from the Air Force’s Arrow air defense system for six days, according to reports from Yedioth Ahronoth and The Times of Israel. The soldiers were initially detained on Tuesday due to alleged sexual offenses committed against their junior colleagues.

The alleged offenses, described as seniority games, reportedly took place over six months and included acts of sodomy, according to the newspaper reports. Approximately 10 new soldiers in the unit may have been involved, according to Ynet.

Investigation Expands to War Crimes

Investigators are exploring whether any alleged attacks occurred during the recent conflict with Iran, during which the accused unit played a vital role in defending Israel from ballistic missile attacks. The investigation seeks to determine if the soldiers’ actions extended to violations during wartime operations.

Past Allegations of Abuse

Reports show that sexual crimes by Israeli soldiers are not limited to their colleagues; instances of abuse against Palestinian prisoners have also surfaced. One case from July 2024 involved a video verified by Al Jazeera, allegedly showing a Palestinian prisoner being gang-raped at the Sde Teiman detention facility in the Negev desert.

The victim reportedly sustained severe injuries, including damage from sodomy, internal organ damage, and permanent disability. Ten Israeli soldiers were arrested on July 29 concerning these rape allegations. These soldiers belonged to Unit 100, which was responsible for guarding the Sde Teiman facility, according to Haaretz.

Controversial Remarks by Minister

Three soldiers arrested on August 4 were later released by military prosecutors, adding to the two previously released after a July 30 court hearing in Kfar Yona, where supporters of the detained soldiers rallied. Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s National Security Minister, sparked controversy by stating that any action, including group rape, is permissible if done for the security of the country.

Broader Context of Conflict

These developments follow reports that Israeli soldiers have killed nearly 57,700 Palestinian civilians, primarily women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. In fact, according to the UN, more than 10,000 women in Gaza have been killed since the start of the conflict in October (UN Gender Alert, May 2024). Relentless bombings have devastated the region, causing food shortages and disease outbreaks.

International Scrutiny

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding its actions in Gaza.
