PS5 Pro Set for Enhanced Graphics with AMD Tech
Sony’s collaboration with AMD promises a leap in gaming visuals.
Gamers anticipating the PlayStation 5 Pro can look forward to significant enhancements in graphics processing, thanks to an ongoing partnership between **Sony** and **AMD**. The collaboration aims to deliver a superior gaming experience.
Project Amethyst: The Genesis of Enhanced Gaming
**Sony** and **AMD** have been jointly working on “Project Amethyst”
which explores machine learning to improve graphics. One tangible result is the FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) technology.
According to an interview with **Mark Cerny**, chief architect of the PS5 Pro, the company is developing a feature that surpasses PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) space amplification tech. The launch is slated for 2026, promising enhanced gaming performance.
In 2023, **Sony’s** Project Amethyst sought to leverage machine learning for an improved gaming experience. AMD’s FSR 4 emerged from this initiative, introducing frame-filling via AI, addressing past FSR image blurring issues.
FSR 4 and Beyond
While PSSR and FSR 4 employ distinct algorithms, the technology set to launch in 2026, will not be a watered-down version. Instead, it represents a full integration of **Sony’s** collaboration with **AMD**, delivering performance on par with FSR 4.
Notably, global spending on video games is projected to reach $256 billion in 2024, underscoring the industry’s rapid growth (Newzoo).

The integration of FSR 4 tech implies that the 2026 PS5 Pro could support frame-interpolation, enabling high-quality modes, originally capped at 30 FPS, to run at 60 FPS, and performance modes potentially reaching 120 FPS.

My good friend and fellow gamer @cerny and I recently reflected on our shared journey — symbolized by these two pieces of amethyst, split from the same stone.
