WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A suspect is dead following an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening in Winston-Salem. The incident took place on the 1000 block of Nancy Lane around 6:05 p.m.

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, two officers arrived at a residence to arrest Antonio Irene Betancourt, 34, who had outstanding warrants. The warrants included charges for carrying a concealed gun, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

During the attempted arrest, Betancourt allegedly engaged in a physical altercation with the officers. Authorities say that during the struggle, Betancourt discharged a firearm, striking one of the officer’s ballistic vests.

The second officer on the scene then discharged their weapon, hitting Betancourt. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded, but Betancourt was pronounced dead at the scene.
