Dbrand admits it had a ‘spectacularly terrible response’ to Killswitch Joy-Con grip detachment complaints

Dbrand to Fix Switch 2 Grip Issues After Backlash

Dbrand, a company known for its device skins, is set to send replacement grips for the Switch 2 after admitting its initial response to customer complaints was poor. The grips, designed to attach to the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, have been detaching under specific conditions, causing frustration among users.

The Problem: Joy-Cons Popping Off

Some users of the Killswitch case noticed their Switch 2 controllers could come loose. This issue occurs when the case and grips are in use and the console is held primarily by its Joy-Cons. A video demonstrates the problem.

The company initially responded with a lengthy Reddit post, arguing that detachment only occurred when holding the Switch 2 in a specific way. This included holding it by the Joy-Cons alone, with one hand, and at a near-horizontal angle.

“By adding those lips, particularly the ones on the interior face of the Joy-Cons, we filled the ‘air gap’ between the Joy-Cons and the Main Case,”

The design of the Killswitch case’s Joy-Con grips, particularly the inner lip, was identified as the source of the issue. This caused a tighter fit, which allowed leverage that could lead to detachment. In some cases, the inner attachment lip was also too thick.

Dbrand’s Response and Apology

In response to user concerns, Dbrand acknowledged the issue. The company is offering replacement grips to those experiencing the problem. The new grips will be available in July. A new post from Dbrand apologized for the earlier communication strategy.

“As easy as it is to boil our original post down to ‘you’re holding it wrong,’ what we’re sober to now is the point that you should be allowed to hold it however the fuck you want, without detachment occurring,” Dbrand said. This mirrors responses to issues with other tech products.

The company is developing two replacement grip versions: one with a thinner retaining lip and another with a new design. The second option is undergoing a mass production trial; Dbrand will announce its choice on July 10th.

Wider Context

This recall and the nature of Dbrand’s response are similar to the manner in which companies often react to product flaws. According to recent data, product recalls have increased by 15% in the last year, highlighting the importance of consumer satisfaction (Consumer Reports 2024).

The original response, which suggested that users held the product incorrectly, has drawn comparisons to Apple’s handling of the iPhone 4 antenna issue.

The next update from Dbrand is expected on July 10th, when details on the new replacement grips will be released.
