$276 Million: Elon Musk Boosts GOP and Texas Candidates
Tech executive Elon Musk has pumped $158 million into the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican-aligned super-PAC, contributing to a total of $276 million in political donations since July according to federal disclosure filings. The funding arrives as Republican candidates face severe political headwinds during the midterm election cycle, driven by economic dissatisfaction, high fuel prices, and the ongoing Iran conflict.
Federal Filings Reveal Massive Super-PAC Transfers to Texas Races
New federal disclosure forms show that Musk’s September contributions included two major transactions of $75 million and $83 million to the Senate Leadership Fund. Within a day of each donation, the super-PAC redirected matching sums of $75 million and $83 million to the Texas PAC, a political group backing embattled Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Paxton faces a competitive Senate race against Representative James Talarico.
Talarico’s campaign has raised approximately $129 million for the contest. Meanwhile, Musk’s corporate footprint in Texas continues to expand. SpaceX is currently constructing its Terafab semiconductor facility near Houston, following the 2024 relocation of the company’s headquarters from California.
Musk Resumes Financial Backing for Republican Politics
The latest contributions cement Musk’s role as a major donor to Republican politics, following a temporary public distancing from Donald Trump over the Epstein files more than a year ago. Representatives for both Musk and Paxton did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the September filings.
Last year, Musk stated to Bloomberg that he had likely spent enough on political campaigns, noting he saw no current reason for future donations while leaving his options open. The renewed financial backing comes as Republican candidates manage voter discontent over leadership and economic conditions ahead of the midterms.
