Elon Musk is richest person in US history relative to GDP, MarketWatch says

Elon Musk is richest person in US history relative to GDP, MarketWatch says

October 9, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Elon Musk’s net worth has crossed above the trillion-dollar mark following a rally in shares of SpaceX and Tesla, making him the richest person in the history of America relative to economic output, MarketWatch reported on October 9, 2026. The milestone places his wealth above historical industrialists like John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie.

Equities Driving Trillion-Dollar Status

Recent gains in shares of SpaceX and Tesla pushed Musk back beyond the trillion-dollar threshold, according to data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index cited by MarketWatch. The majority of Musk’s wealth stems from his equity stakes in these two companies, both carrying multi-trillion-dollar market capitalizations. Since the beginning of the month, shares in both companies have risen 6%.

Musk holds a 48.4% equity stake in SpaceX, representing roughly 6.42 billion shares across common stock, options, and unvested performance awards per an August SEC filing. He also owns 20% of Tesla based on a June SEC filing, though standard wealth calculations exclude unvested performance shares. Additional holdings in private ventures Neuralink and the Boring Co. contribute to the valuation.

Musk's Net Worth Surpasses Three Competitors Combined

The concentration of assets in private and publicly traded entities creates substantial volatility in Musk’s net worth. His fortune peaked at $1.32 trillion in June following the initial public offering of SpaceX, before dropping below $700 billion in August as those shares retreated. Despite these swings, his current standing surpasses the wealth of the next three individuals—Google co-founder Larry Page, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin—combined.

Evaluating historical wealth requires adjusting for the expansion of the broader economy. To establish a baseline, MarketWatch utilized comparable figures from Forbes’ 2007 list of the richest Americans of all time, calculating each individual’s peak net worth as a percentage of U.S. gross domestic product at the time and applying those shares to the modern economy. U.S. GDP reached an annualized $32.56 trillion in the second quarter ending September 30. Musk’s $1.02 trillion fortune equates to roughly 3.1% of the national economy.

Timeline of Wealth Expansion

The trajectory of modern ultra-high-net-worth milestones accelerated sharply over the decade. In 2020, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos became the first person to cross the $200 billion mark. By April 2025, Musk held a net worth of $342 billion. In the 18 months following, that figure nearly tripled to reach the current trillionaire threshold.

While nineteenth- and twentieth-century industrialists built fortunes on oil, steel, and railroads, contemporary wealth accumulation draws comparisons to the Industrial Revolution due to the transformative economic potential of artificial intelligence. Historical net-worth estimates remain subject to debate among economists regarding record-keeping differences and varying valuation methodologies across eras.
