The South African police have shot dead eighteen suspects who would have prepared a robbery on a cash transport. This happened in Makhado, in the northern province of Limpopo.
According to the chief of police, it was a gang that had been under investigation since January. The members would be responsible for robberies in several provinces and would also like to commit a major robbery today.
To prevent that, officers went to a building in Makhado where the gang members were hiding. The idea was to arrest them before the robbery, says the police chief.
1.5 hour gunfight
An hour and a half of gunfight ensued in which sixteen men and two women were killed. As far as known, these were all suspects present. A police officer was seriously injured in the gunfire.
According to the police chief, many weapons were seized in the building. There were also explosives.
