Zelenskyy Rejects Putin’s Moscow Meeting Offer, Accuses russia of diplomatic Farce
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected a proposal from Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold peace talks in Moscow, denouncing the offer as a deliberate obstruction of genuine negotiation efforts. In a stark interview with ABC News, Zelenskyy stated he could not travel to “the capital of this terrorist” while Ukraine remains under relentless attack.
“I can’t go to the capital of this terrorist because Ukraine is under missile attacks, under fire every day,” Zelenskyy explained. He countered Putin’s invitation with a direct challenge: “Putin can come to Kyiv.”
The rejection comes amidst ongoing diplomatic pressure from the United states, with former President Donald Trump actively advocating for a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders. A bilateral or trilateral summit was a key objective of trump’s meeting with Putin in Alaska last month. While Trump initially suggested a meeting would follow Zelenskyy’s visits to Washington and European capitals, progress has stalled as Moscow continues to impose conditions and escalate shelling across Ukraine.
this week, Putin publicly stated his willingness to meet with Zelenskyy, but only on Russian soil. kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov later clarified the invitation was intended for “talks, not to capitulate.”
Zelenskyy, speaking in Paris following a summit of allied nations, subtly acknowledged the invitation as a tactic to derail negotiations. “I believe that if you want the meeting not to take place, you should invite me to Moscow,” he remarked, adding that even the offer of a meeting, however insincere, represented a small step forward.Trump, in a separate interview with CBS News, offered a cautiously optimistic outlook, stating, “Something will happen, but they are not ready yet… We’re going to do it,” without providing a concrete timeline.
Escalating Attacks Undermine Diplomatic Efforts
zelenskyy further underscored the futility of current diplomatic gestures, citing a dramatic surge in russian attacks. In a social media post on Saturday, he reported over 1,300 drone attacks, nearly 900 guided bomb strikes, and approximately 50 missile launches targeting 14 Ukrainian regions in the first five days of September alone.
“Russia is seeking to prolong the war, trying to turn diplomacy into a blatant farce,” Zelenskyy declared. He urged international partners to respond with strengthened sanctions against Moscow, increased military aid to Ukraine, and effective restrictions on Russian oil and gas revenues.
The Ukrainian President’s strong words highlight a growing frustration with what he perceives as Russia’s insincere approach to peace negotiations, coupled with a continued escalation of violence on the ground. The future of diplomatic efforts remains uncertain as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty against ongoing Russian aggression.
