xAI Reveals Roadmap, Layoffs & Bold Plans for Lunar AI Factory | Elon Musk

xAI publicly released a recording of its all-hands meeting on Wednesday, a move seemingly prompted by prior reporting in The Novel York Times detailing discussions from the meeting. The 45-minute video offered a deeper look into Elon Musk’s plans for the artificial intelligence laboratory, including its product development and continued relationship with the X platform.

A significant portion of the meeting addressed recent personnel changes at xAI, which Musk characterized as a restructuring resulting in layoffs. While organizational shifts are typical, the scale of the departures—including members of the founding team—has generated internal uncertainty, according to attendees.

“As a company grows, especially as quickly as xAI, the structure must evolve,” Musk stated in the video. “This unfortunately required parting ways with some people. We wish them well in future endeavors.”

The reorganization divides xAI into four core teams. One team will focus on the Grok chatbot, including voice capabilities. Another will concentrate on the coding functionality within the app. A third will develop the Imagine video generator, and the final team will be dedicated to the ambitious Macrohard project. Toby Pohlen, who will lead Macrohard, explained that the project aims to simulate any computer task, potentially even designing complex systems like rocket engines entirely through AI.

Executives also shared data regarding X and xAI’s performance. Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, announced that the platform had “just crossed” $1 billion in annual recurring revenue from subscriptions, attributing the growth to a recent holiday marketing campaign.

xAI’s Imagine tool is reportedly generating 50 million videos daily and over 6 billion images in the last 30 days, according to internal metrics. However, these figures are complicated by the proliferation of deepfake pornography on X during the same period. The New York Times has reported a surge in AI-generated explicit images on the platform, with an estimated 1.8 million sexualized images appearing in just nine days, suggesting a substantial portion of Imagine’s output may consist of this controversial content.

Musk concluded the presentation by reiterating his vision for space-based data centers and expanding on plans for a lunar factory dedicated to producing AI satellites. He proposed utilizing a lunar mass driver—an electromagnetic catapult—to launch these satellites. According to Musk, this infrastructure could enable the creation of an AI cluster capable of harnessing a significant portion of the sun’s energy output, or even extending its reach to other galaxies.

“It’s demanding to imagine what an intelligence of that scale would reckon about,” Musk said, “but it’s going to be incredibly exciting to observe it happen.”

The presentation follows a recent merger between SpaceX and xAI, announced on February 2nd, creating the most valuable private company globally, according to the New York Times. This consolidation further intertwines Musk’s business ventures, despite the seemingly disparate nature of a rocket company and an AI start-up, as noted in a February 7th New York Times report.
