Whitewater Ski Resort: BC’s Hidden Gem for Skiers & Foodies

March 24, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Whitewater Ski Resort in British Columbia offers a distinctly unhurried ski experience, prioritizing the act of skiing itself over the amenities and conveniences found at larger resorts, according to long-time volunteer mountain host George Kilpatrick. “It’s like ‘back in the day’ type skiing, when skiing was about skiing,” Kilpatrick said. “You can ski, or eat, that’s it. No internet, no service.”

The resort’s base area, centered around the Day Lodge, reflects this simplicity. Fresh Tracks Cafe, Coal Oil Johnny’s Pub, a coffee bar and a gift shop comprise the majority of the on-site services. Beyond these, skiers will find only a rental shop and Glory Lodge, a slight licensed lodge at the base of the Glory Ridge chairlift. This limited selection, however, is sufficient, and simplifies meeting up with friends on the slopes.

Despite its low-key atmosphere, Whitewater boasts substantial skiable terrain. The resort covers 1314 hectares (approximately 3246 acres), comparable to larger, more well-known resorts like Revelstoke, which offers 3121 hectares. Whitewater also features 113 runs, exceeding Revelstoke’s 75.

The resort’s lift infrastructure contributes to its old-school charm. Rather than modern high-speed lifts or gondolas, Whitewater operates four lifts: two quads, one triple, and a double. The Silver King Lift, a two-person lift, was constructed in 1993 and still utilizes wooden chairs with metal lap bars.

The slower lift speeds, with an uphill capacity of 5700 skiers per hour – significantly less than the 15,000 to 70,000 capacity of other British Columbia resorts – contribute to a less crowded experience. While this means more time on the lifts, it also allows skiers to spread out across the mountain and enjoy the terrain without congestion. The slower pace also benefits those tackling Whitewater’s renowned glade runs and accessible backcountry touring options.

Reaching Whitewater requires more effort than some other British Columbia ski destinations. Travelers from Auckland must fly to Vancouver, then connect to Trail, a smaller airport that can be subject to fog-related cancellations, before completing a one-hour drive to Nelson and the resort. However, the relative inaccessibility helps to preserve crowds manageable, particularly when powder conditions attract skiers to other areas.

Early February conditions at Whitewater offered pleasant spring skiing, with temperatures around 0°C rather than the typical winter average of -8°C. This provided a welcome change for skiers accustomed to extremely cold conditions.

Whitewater’s terrain includes a generous selection of black and double-black diamond runs, chutes, bowls, and glades, as well as opportunities for backcountry touring. The resort is also known for its unique dining options. Unlike typical ski resort fare, Whitewater emphasizes nutritious and affordable meals.

The resort’s signature “bowls” are a popular choice. The Glory Bowl, priced at CA$18.50 (approximately $23 USD), features marinated tofu, spinach, shredded carrot and beet, candied almonds, and tahini dressing served over basmati rice. Other options include marinated salmon and coconut chickpea curry. These are often paired with yam fries and a hot drip coffee, and a fudgy raspberry brownie.

Whitewater Mountain Resort offers a deliberate departure from the increasingly common, amenity-rich ski resort experience. The focus remains firmly on the skiing itself, fostering a community of skiers who prioritize time on the slopes and a simpler, more connected experience.
