Heatwave Grips Italy: Temperatures Soar to 38°C
Scorching North African Air Fuels Mid-Week Peak Heat
A powerful anticyclone is ushering in a wave of intense heat across Italy, driving temperatures upwards significantly. Hot air masses originating from North Africa are now dominating the Mediterranean basin, set to peak mid-week.
Wednesday Marks Hottest Day
Starting today, Monday, temperatures are expected to climb steadily, reaching their zenith by Wednesday. Regions like Puglia’s Tavoliere, Matera, Cosenza, and eastern Sicily could see highs approaching a scorching 38°C. Inland areas of Lazio, Umbria, Emilia, and the Northwest will also experience oppressive conditions, with temperatures hitting 35°C. A slight reprieve is anticipated only in the Triveneto area, where a modest influx of unstable air from Central Europe may bring some cooler conditions.
Thermal Decline Expected Thursday
The warmth is set to break on Thursday as cooler air currents push southward. This shift is expected to bring a general decrease in thermal values across the Italian peninsula, continuing through Friday. Following this brief cooldown, a renewed anticyclonic surge is predicted to drive temperatures back up across the country, though this remains to be confirmed.

The concentration of air pollutants in a region is closely tied to weather patterns. For instance, prolonged high-pressure systems, like the one currently establishing itself, can trap pollutants near the ground, leading to poorer air quality.
