east Jakarta, Indonesia – Police have reclassified the status of a grandmother, identified as “grandma R,” from suspect to witness in the looting of television personality Uya Kuya‘s home, following a restorative justice (RJ) process. Kuya has opted for a peaceful resolution to the incident, prioritizing mediation over prosecution for the elderly woman.
The decision comes as authorities continue to investigate a larger case involving 10 suspects linked to two distinct clusters of criminal activity at kuya’s residence: an assault on four police officers and the actual looting of the property. A total of 18 individuals were initially secured by police, with eight released as witnesses alongside Grandma R. “Furthermore, the mediation process is carried out by both parties, with the results in the form of an agreement to not sue each other,” a police spokesperson explained.
According to authorities, the ten suspects are divided into two groups. Six individuals are accused of looting, while four are facing charges related to the attack on officers attempting to secure the scene. Police indicated the presence of individuals identifying with the “Anarko” group during the unrest. The RJ process facilitated an agreement between Kuya and Grandma R to forgo legal action, emphasizing a path toward reconciliation.
