USA TODAY Sports College Baseball Poll: LSU Now No. 1 After Week 2

February 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders baseball team faces a challenging rebuild following a disappointing 2026 season, finishing with a 20-33 record and missing the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year. Head coach Tim Tadlock is looking to a fresh class of players to revitalize the program, as the team seeks to regain its former prominence.

The struggles of the Red Raiders come as LSU has risen to the No. 1 ranking in the latest USA TODAY Sports college baseball coaches poll, released February 23, 2026. LSU’s undefeated 8-0 start propelled them past UCLA, despite the Bruins sweeping a series against TCU. Auburn, Georgia, and Florida also made significant jumps in the rankings, highlighting the competitive landscape of the Southeastern Conference.

Oklahoma experienced the most dramatic rise in the poll, moving from No. 30 in the preseason to No. 14 after a 7-0 start that included victories over Texas Tech, TCU, and Oklahoma State during the Shriner’s Children’s College Showdown. This early success underscores the growing strength of the Sooners program.

Tim Tadlock, who completed his 13th season at Texas Tech in 2025, has a collegiate career record of 908-403 across 22 years as a head coach. He previously led Grayson County College for nine seasons, achieving a record of 435-127 before arriving at Texas Tech in 2013. During his tenure at Texas Tech, Tadlock has guided the Red Raiders to four College World Series appearances (2014, 2016, 2018, 2019) and three Big 12 Championships (2016, 2017, 2019). He was named National Coach of the Year in both 2014 and 2018.

Despite these past successes, the recent downturn has placed increased scrutiny on Tadlock’s ability to return the program to national contention. The team’s performance in 2026 represents a significant departure from the consistent success enjoyed under his leadership in the mid-2010s. A documentary, tentatively titled *Tadlock: Built From Grit*, is in production by Netflix, ESPN, and Guinness World Records, exploring his coaching journey and impact on college baseball.

In November 2025, Texas Tech revised Tadlock’s contract to maintain his guaranteed income among the nation’s highest for college baseball coaches, signaling the university’s continued commitment to his leadership. The details of the revised contract were not disclosed, but the move suggests a desire to provide stability during the rebuilding process.

The updated USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll reflects the early season standings, with LSU leading the rankings, followed by UCLA, Texas, Georgia Tech, and Mississippi State. Teams that dropped out of the poll include Louisville, Virginia, and Arizona, demonstrating the volatility of college baseball rankings. The Red Raiders are not currently ranked, adding to the pressure to improve their performance in the upcoming games.
