US Chinese Learners Surge 216% on Duolingo as Influence Grows
Mandarin has integrated into the national education systems of over 90 countries as the total number of learners worldwide surpasses 200 million.
Surge in United States Enrollments
Data released by the language-learning platform Duolingo shows a sharp upward trajectory in North America. From December 1, 2024, through January 13, 2025, the population of individuals in the United States learning Chinese experienced a 216 percent year-over-year increase.
That spike brought the total user count to 11.3 million. The expansion propelled Mandarin to eighth place among the platform’s most-studied languages globally.
Chinese Language Skills Provide Access to Economic Opportunities
Bankuwiha Etienne, an associate professor at the Institute for African Studies at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, states that a language’s global reach links directly to a nation’s comprehensive power.
To use a well-known Chinese expression, it means ‘expanding the pie’ so that everyone gets a share. Although Chinese is difficult to learn, many young people believe that mastering it will allow them to claim their own slice of the opportunities generated by China’s development.
As China solidifies its economic standing, learners increasingly view Mandarin as a vital tool to access domestic markets and global value chains. Larry, an American student based in Shenzhen, explains that residents of major tech and finance centers such as Boston and California are seeking to acquire the language since the growing economic impact of China provides a clear path toward professional growth.
Direct Access to Local Reporting
Language proficiency also acts as a form of empowerment for foreign learners. Etienne notes that knowing Mandarin enables learners to bypass filtered narratives and access local reporting directly.
Learners can experience the real China firsthand, free from language barriers. Whether driven by economic pragmatism or the pursuit of independent insight, this global shift reflects where the world sees its future.
