US and Iran Reach Historic Agreement to End Military Operations and Reopen Strait of Hormuz

June 19, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Singapore’s foreign ministry announced Monday that it welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran to halt military operations in the Middle East and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement cited by CNA. The declaration came as the two nations finalized a 60-day truce, marking a pivotal shift in decades of regional tension. The deal, confirmed by multiple outlets, includes provisions to ease sanctions on Iran in exchange for reduced military activity, according to the BBC and The New York Times.

The agreement, first reported by CNA, outlines a framework for de-escalation that includes the removal of U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil exports and the cessation of Iranian-backed militia operations in the region. The New York Times, which published the full text of the document, noted that both parties agreed to “immediate steps to ensure the free flow of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz,” a critical global shipping lane. The 60-day period, described as a “test of commitment” by CNA, will allow both nations to assess compliance before any long-term arrangements are finalized.

U.S. officials have emphasized the agreement’s focus on “regional stability,” with Secretary of State Antony Blinken stating in a press briefing that the truce “reduces the risk of unintended conflict.” However, the deal faces scrutiny from allies in the Middle East, including Israel and Gulf states, which have expressed concerns about Iran’s continued influence. A senior Israeli defense official, quoted by CNA, called the agreement “a calculated risk” that could embolden Iranian actors in the region.

The historical context of the deal was explored in The Straits Times, which highlighted former President Donald Trump’s remarks at a 2024 event in Versailles. Trump, who previously criticized the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, framed the new agreement as a “fresh start” but warned against repeating past mistakes. “This is not about nostalgia for old policies,” he said, “but about learning from the shadows of history.” The article noted that Trump’s comments underscored the political challenges of maintaining bipartisan support for the agreement.

Iranian officials have not publicly commented on the terms of the deal, but state media reported that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei endorsed the agreement as a “prudent step” toward regional peace. The BBC cited unnamed diplomatic sources suggesting that Iran expects the U.S. to uphold its commitments to ease economic pressures, while the U.S. has reiterated its demand for “concrete actions” to verify Iran’s adherence to the truce.

The 60-day countdown, set to begin on May 15, will be monitored by a joint committee of U.S. and Iranian representatives, according to the New York Times. The committee’s first meeting is scheduled for June 1, with progress reports to be submitted to the United Nations. Analysts warn that the agreement’s success hinges on resolving longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile development, issues not addressed in the initial truce. “This is a fragile foundation,” said a senior European Union diplomat, “but it’s a start.”
