UK to Recognize Palestinian State This Sunday, BBC reports
LONDON – The United kingdom will formally recognize the State of Palestine this Sunday, according to a report from the British broadcasting corporation (BBC). The decision follows a july warning from Labor Party leader Keir Starmer to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s government, stating he would make the proclamation “in September before the United Nations General assembly” if israel did not take “relevant steps to end the scandalous situation in Gaza.”
Starmer communicated this intention in a video released by the BBC, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire, a commitment against West Bank annexation, and progress “to a long-term process that concludes with a two-state solution.”
Netanyahu responded within hours, accusing Starmer of rewarding “the monstrous terrorism of Hamas and punishing his victims,” and warning that “a jihadist state at Israel‘s border today will threaten Britain tommorow.”
The United Kingdom joins Portugal in announcing recognition this Sunday, with Portugal making its announcement Friday.
