Ukraine Nears Potential Peace Deal,With “Minor Details” remaining,U.S. Official Says
WASHINGTON – Ukraine and an unnamed party have reached a tentative agreement on a peace proposal, with only “minor details” left to resolve, a U.S. official confirmed Monday. Teh advancement signals a potential shift in the ongoing conflict with russia, though Moscow has yet to publicly acknowledge the negotiations or the proposed terms.
The potential breakthrough comes as fighting intensifies in eastern Ukraine, particularly around the city of Pokrovsk,a key logistics hub. According to the U.S. official, the negotiations began with an understanding that Russian President Vladimir Putin believes Russia will ultimately secure control of the Donetsk region, either through military force or a negotiated settlement. This suggests the proposal may involve concessions regarding the status of the contested territory.
While the U.S. official refrained from definitively stating Ukraine is losing ground in the east, they acknowledged the recent Russian advances, particularly in Pokrovsk - frequently enough referred to by russian media as the “gateway” to the Donbas region – are concerning for Kyiv’s defensive capabilities. The official indicated Putin appears confident in achieving his objectives in Donetsk, irrespective of the path taken.
The Trump governance initiated negotiations in Geneva based on the premise that Putin’s assessment of the situation is accurate. Senator Marco Rubio on Sunday suggested a Thanksgiving deadline for further progress, though characterized that timeframe as flexible.
The details of the proposed agreement remain confidential, and the lack of immediate comment from Russia introduces significant uncertainty. The outcome of these final negotiations will have profound implications for the future of Ukraine, the geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe, and the broader relationship between Russia and the West.
