Urgent Warning: Time Running out to Get Vaccinated Against Flu and RSV Before Christmas
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging eligible individuals to get vaccinated against flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) as cases of both viruses surge with just three weeks remaining until Christmas.
Recent data from the UKHSA reveals a significant increase in flu cases, especially among adults, with hospital admissions rising by 63% in the past week. While the flu vaccine is the best defense against severe illness and hospitalization, it takes up to two weeks to develop full immunity following vaccination. This limited timeframe means those eligible should book appointments promptly to maximize protection before the holiday season.
RSV cases are also climbing, despite a later start to the season this year. Vaccinations are recommended for pregnant women starting at 28 weeks gestation – with vaccination advised during every pregnancy to protect newborns, who are most vulnerable. Individuals aged 75 to 79, or those who turned 80 after September 1st, 2024, are also eligible for the RSV vaccine.
Dr. Jamie Lopez Bernal, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, emphasized the urgency, stating that increased social mixing expected over the coming weeks will likely exacerbate the rise in cases, potentially leading to a peak over Christmas and into the New Year.
“Nobody wants anyone in their family, especially young children, to spend Christmas in hospital,” Dr. Bernal said. “The best defense against this is a vaccine, but time is running out.”
Along with vaccination, the UKHSA recommends practicing preventative measures such as frequent handwashing, ensuring good ventilation, and wearing a face mask if unwell, particularly when around those at higher risk. Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms – including high temperature, cough, and fatigue – should limit contact with others.
