Trump‘s MAGA Army Takes Aim at European Values, Report Warns
A new report from the European Cultural Foundation argues that the United states, under former President Donald Trump, is actively attempting to reshape the transatlantic relationship by promoting conservative values and leveraging the concept of free speech to bolster its allies within the European Union. The report, set to launch at the European House of History in Brussels, contends that European leaders’ hesitant response to Trump’s actions invites further intervention and risks placing the EU on a path towards subservience to U.S. interests.
According to André Wilkens, Director of the European Cultural Foundation, a shift in mindset is crucial. He asserts, “‘It’s culture, stupid!'” needs to become a guiding principle for European leadership. Only by prioritizing cultural investment and understanding the deep-seated ”European sentiment” can national governments and EU institutions effectively counter future provocations.
The report highlights a surprising strength in European identity. Trust in the EU is currently at its highest level since 2007, with majorities across the EU-27 expressing attachment to europe and optimism about its future. This sentiment extends beyond economic considerations, with many viewing the EU as a community built on shared values, security, and a common destiny.
Though, the study warns that this positive outlook is currently stifled. It depicts the EU as operating in a “Truman moment” – referencing the film The Truman Show – where governments primarily react to crises initiated by Trump and his European allies, rather than proactively setting their own agenda.
Author of the study, Zerka, urges European leaders to recognize a coordinated international effort to undermine Europe‘s liberal democratic order. He recommends leveraging the existing “strong European sentiment” to build strategic autonomy in key areas like defense, technology, energy, and the completion of the single market, even if it leads to increased transatlantic friction.
Zerka stresses the need for mainstream political parties to reclaim concepts like sovereignty, nationalism, and patriotism from the ”New Right” and to demonstrate greater integrity and leadership. He concludes that taking these steps is essential for Europe to “break free from a future of American vassalage, and become the ‘author of its own story.'”
The report emphasizes that the upcoming 7-year EU budget will serve as a critical test of europe’s commitment to its own future, requiring meaningful investment in culture, media, and civil society to effectively navigate the challenges ahead.
