Trump Postpones Iran Strikes After ‘Productive Conversations’ | US-Iran Crisis

March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump announced a five-day postponement of potential military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure on Monday, following what he described as “good and productive conversations” with Tehran. The announcement, delivered via a post on his Truth Social platform, came after a period of escalating tensions and threats of retaliation between the two nations.

“I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” Trump wrote. He further stated he had instructed the Department of War to postpone any military action for five days, contingent on the success of ongoing discussions.

The move follows Trump’s weekend ultimatum demanding Iran fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping within 48 hours, or face the “obliteration” of its power plants. Iran had previously threatened to completely shut down the vital waterway – a transit point for approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply – in response to any military action against it, and also pledged attacks on energy facilities in Israel and Gulf countries, according to reports.

The de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has already triggered a spike in global oil prices and shortages of cooking gas in several Asian countries. Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, warned on Monday that the situation in the Middle East is “very severe” and surpasses the combined impact of the 1970s energy crises.

In response to Trump’s initial threat, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that any attack on Iran would be met with retaliatory strikes targeting power plants in regions supplying electricity to US bases, as well as economic, industrial, and energy infrastructure with American investment. Iran’s Defence Council also warned that any attack on its southern coast or islands would result in the deployment of sea mines to disrupt Gulf shipping routes.

Al Jazeera reported that, despite three weeks of conflict, the likelihood of Iran rejecting Trump’s offer for negotiations is “remote.” A source in Tehran stated that Iran seeks guarantees against future aggression and a willingness to reach a lasting deal. Diplomats cited by Al Jazeera indicated that multiple countries have been engaged in conversations with both the White House and Iranian embassies, urging de-escalation.

Trump had signaled a potential shift in tone on Sunday, suggesting the possibility of “winding down” the conflict, even as US Marines and heavy landing craft were deployed to the region. The current pause in threatened military action comes as the US and Iran engage in discussions, the details of which remain undisclosed. Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after his death in earlier strikes, has not yet publicly commented on the ongoing talks.

As of Monday evening, Iran has not officially confirmed the ongoing conversations with the United States. The Islamic Republic’s position on fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains unchanged, pending verifiable assurances regarding its security and future stability.
