Trump Orders New Women’s Health Division at NIH
“This is a transformative moment for women in America. The executive order, signed on Monday, October 19, 2026, also mandates the creation of a White House task force focused on the subject. According to aljazeera.com, the initiative requires the new health division to be established within 90 days to accelerate scientific discoveries, expand clinical access, and modernise care throughout every stage of a woman’s life.”
Leadership and Structure of the New Division
The White House task force will be co-chaired by White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr., according to aljazeera.com. USA TODAY reported that Wiles has recently spoken publicly about her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, while Kennedy steers health policy following an 18-month tenure that included changes to disease prevention and vaccine policy.
The new NIH division will not replace the existing Office of Research on Women’s Health, which has operated since 1990, but will carry a broader mandate extending beyond research, USA TODAY noted. The first lady’s office outlined five innovation pillars, including targeted funding for conditions such as endometriosis, and a faster timeline for delivering promising therapeutics to female patients. “In 2026, medical advances can do more than just prolong life,” said Melania Trump.

The first lady has been actively preparing for this shift through working sessions with physicians and experts. Her focus also encompasses midlife health, including Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and stroke, following a period where menopause policy gained traction in Washington. Notably, the U.S.
Funding Gaps and Workforce Cuts Threaten Research Stability
While the executive order mandates that the HHS fund the administrative costs of the task force, aljazeera.com reported that the order does not include any specific funding targets or dollar amounts. Critics have questioned the practical impact of the initiative given recent cuts to the federal workforce during Trump’s second term. Thousands of employees have been laid off at the NIH, and the agency was previously ordered to slash its budget by $2.6bn, a 35 percent reduction. Concerns remain regarding the stability of long-term research, especially following a 2025 move by the HHS to terminate regional contracts for the Women’s Health Initiative, which drew a multi-state lawsuit.
