Trump Declares Iran Ceasefire Over and Threatens Further Military Strikes

August 19, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Trump Declares Ceasefire Dead After Overnight Strikes

President Donald Trump signaled the end of Washington’s ceasefire with Iran on Wednesday, ruling out immediate diplomatic efforts to salvage the agreement. Speaking on his final day at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, the President confirmed the deal is finished and signaled that the United States would likely reimpose its naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, as reported by CNBC.

Central Command Targets Iranian Infrastructure

The diplomatic collapse follows a massive U.S. military operation on Tuesday. According to U.S. Central Command posts on X, forces struck more than 80 targets inside Iran, including command and control networks, air defense systems, and anti-ship missile capabilities. The strikes also destroyed more than 60 Revolutionary Guard small boats.

This military retaliation was triggered by attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Simultaneously, the U.S. Treasury Department revoked a waiver that had previously permitted Iran to sell its oil.

Shifting Rhetoric on Nuclear Capabilities

Standing alongside Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Trump downplayed the threat posed by Tehran’s nuclear program. He claimed the U.S. possesses the equipment necessary to reach nuclear material stored deep underground—a distinct shift from the justifications provided when the conflict began on February 28.

When pressed on plans to secure that material following the ceasefire’s collapse, Trump insisted there was no immediate pressure to act. He added that ground troops would not be deployed unless targets were completely eliminated or a new agreement was reached.

Market Volatility and Escalation Risks

Warnings of further escalation surfaced during talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump told reporters that Washington would “very probably” attack Iran hard again overnight. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth backed the President’s stance, confirming that forces remain prepared to strike deeper into Iranian territory if ordered.
