Trinity School Students Build to Fight ⁣Hunger in West Texas

MIDLAND, texas (October 26, 2025) – Students at Trinity School in Midland recently combined creativity and⁣ community service, donating 3,549 cans of food to the West Texas Food Bank‌ as part of their annual BIGG (Big ⁢Ideas of the Greater Good) project. The donation comes at a ⁤critical time for the food bank, which has faced increased⁤ demand and reduced federal support this year.

For one week, Trinity students participated in a school-wide canned food ‌drive culminating in a “CANstruction” competition. Students‌ were challenged to build structures and scenes using the collected cans, fostering teamwork and innovative thinking.

“This is a great way to develop teamwork and to ⁣promote the idea of helping other people,” explained Brian Peters, Head of Lower School at Trinity School.‍ He noted the excitement of watching students collaborate and problem-solve, utilizing a typically utilitarian item in a creative way.

the resulting creations were diverse, ranging from a fairytale⁤ castle complete with can-constructed royalty to a whimsical scene populated by ⁢llama figures. Kindergarten classes collaborated to build a colorful apple orchard, meticulously arranging cans to represent trees, apples, and the sun. Another class tackled the “three can wonders of the world,” recreating miniature versions of the Coliseum, Eiffel Tower, and Pyramids.

trinity staff and West Texas Food Bank representatives judged the CANstruction projects, awarding prizes for most creative design, best construction, and best use of can labels.

Libby Stephens, CEO of the West Texas Food Bank, praised the students’ efforts. “Little hands⁢ truly can ‍make⁤ a ⁤big difference in our community,” she said, emphasizing the impact of the donation.”This year has been difficult for many different reasons. It was a difficult summer. We seen some federal⁣ cuts‍ and lost access to food. So food drives right now ⁤and donations are a huge help right now.”

The project serves‍ as a kick-off to Hunger Action ⁣Month, highlighting Trinity’s commitment to‍ service learning and making a positive impact in West Texas.
