A Wisconsin woman convicted in the 2014 Slender Man stabbing has gone missing after leaving a supervised mental health facility, authorities said. Morgan Geyser, now 20, was last seen Monday after authorities discovered she had cut the GPS monitor she was required to wear.
The Department of Corrections issued an apprehension request just after midnight. The Madison police Department stated they were not alerted to Geyser’s disappearance until the following morning when staff at the group home where she was residing contacted them. The corrections department has not yet responded to requests for comment. This incident raises concerns about public safety and the challenges of reintegrating individuals with severe mental health issues who have committed violent crimes.
Geyser and her co-defendant, Anissa Weier, both 12 at the time, attacked their classmate, Payton leutner, in a suburban Milwaukee park following a sleepover. Geyser stabbed Leutner more than a dozen times while Weier encouraged her. Leutner suffered life-threatening injuries but survived.
The girls told investigators they committed the attack to appease Slender Man,a fictional internet character created in 2009 by Eric Knudson. They believed they needed to kill Leutner to become Slender Man’s servants and protect their families from harm. The case gained international attention, highlighting the influence of online mythology and the mental health struggles of the perpetrators.
Weier pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree intentional homicide and was released from a psychiatric facility in 2021. Geyser was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and committed to a mental health institution. She was granted supervised release in late 2023. Authorities are currently searching for Geyser, and her disappearance prompts questions about the effectiveness of the state’s mental health and supervision systems.
