USTA Names David Butorac US Open Tournament Director
NEW YORK - The United States Tennis Association (USTA) today announced the promotion of David Butorac to Tournament Director of the US Open, effective immediatly.Butorac succeeds Stacey Allaster, and assumes leadership as the tournament continues to experience record growth in prize money and player advocacy.
The appointment arrives amid a period of significant advancement for the US Open. ahead of the current tournament, the USTA revealed a record $90 million prize purse - a 20% increase from the $75 million awarded last year – including $5 million to both the men’s and women’s singles champions. This increase followed direct lobbying efforts by players seeking a larger share of revenue from the grand Slam tournaments: the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Butorac’s appointment signals the USTA’s commitment to continuing this positive trajectory and addressing player concerns.
Butorac, a former professional tennis player, expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I am beyond excited and grateful to serve as US Open Tournament Director. This is, in many ways, a dream come true and the culmination of my life and career in tennis.” He also acknowledged the mentorship of his predecessor, adding, “I owe a tremendous gratitude to Stacey from whom I learned more than I ever could have imagined after transitioning from a career playing on tour. Now, I cannot wait to help drive the continued growth and success of the US Open well into the future.”
