Indonesia to Miss September 2025 Partial Solar Eclipse, NASA Confirms
A partial solar eclipse scheduled for September 21-22, 2025, will not be visible from Indonesia, according to reports from NASA.While a total lunar eclipse on September 7, 2025, will be widely observable across the archipelago, the solar eclipse will only cross portions of south America, Africa, and the Atlantic ocean.
The September 21-22 solar eclipse path, as noted by NASA, will span Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Namibia, Angola, and the southern Congo region. This trajectory places the phenomenon outside of the viewable range for Asia, including Indonesia.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow. Only locations within the eclipse’s shadow path – either the umbra or penumbra – can witness the event. According to eclipse maps from Time and Date, the moon’s shadow will not extend to Southeast Asia in September 2025.
Despite missing the solar eclipse, Indonesian observers will have the opportunity to view a total lunar eclipse on September 7, 2025, potentially visible in almost all regions of the country, weather permitting. The lunar eclipse is expected to last several hours, peaking at midnight, and space institutions encourage public observation of this relatively infrequent astronomical event.
