Russia Claims Capture of Pokrovsk as Ukraine Downplays Gains Ahead of Peace Talks
POKROVSK, Ukraine - The Kremlin on Monday released video appearing to show Russian soldiers raising a flag in Pokrovsk, claiming full control of the strategically contested city in eastern Ukraine. The assertion comes as Ukraine dismissed Russian battlefield boasts as exaggerated ahead of anticipated peace negotiations involving Saudi Arabia.
Pokrovsk, a key transportation hub in the Donetsk region, had been under heavy assault for weeks. While Ukrainian officials have acknowledged fierce fighting in the area, they have so far refrained from confirming a full Russian takeover, characterizing Moscow’s claims as typical propaganda intended to influence the narrative before upcoming diplomatic efforts. The city’s importance stemmed from its road and rail connections, though frequent attacks on those routes had already forced Kyiv to seek alternative supply lines, diminishing its strategic value.
According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov,President Vladimir Putin personally thanked commanders and military personnel for their “triumphant actions” in Pokrovsk during a Sunday visit.”I would like to thank you for the results of the operations in Pokrovsk – both you, the entire command and personnel of the group, and, of course, the fighters, our guys who are carrying out these combat missions,” Putin stated. He further asserted that success in Pokrovsk would “ensure steady progress” toward achieving Russia’s war objectives.
CNN geolocated the Kremlin-released video, confirming it was filmed in Pokrovsk’s city center. Despite the visual evidence, Ukrainian officials remain cautious, suggesting Russia’s claims are intended to create a more favorable position as international discussions regarding a potential resolution to the conflict gain momentum. Saudi Arabia is set to host peace talks in the coming weeks, though the extent of participation and potential for breakthrough remains uncertain.
